The layer nobody sees until it fails

Cabling is the least glamorous item on any technology budget and the one with the longest life. The switches you buy today will be replaced in five to seven years. The firewall sooner. The cable in your walls will likely still be there in twenty.

It is also the layer where cutting corners produces the most persistent, hardest to diagnose problems. Intermittent connectivity, ports that negotiate at the wrong speed, a wireless access point that keeps dropping, a camera that goes offline in the afternoon. These get blamed on the switch, the software or the vendor for months before somebody tests the cable and finds it was never terminated properly.

How we install

Design before pulling. We walk the space, review floor plans, and plan drop locations around how the space will actually be used rather than where it is easy to run cable. Telecom closet placement matters because copper has a 90 meter limit from patch panel to outlet, and a poorly located closet forces expensive workarounds later. Wireless access point placement gets planned deliberately rather than defaulting to the middle of a hallway.

Pull with care. Category cable has real physical limits. Exceeding the bend radius, over tightening a tie wrap or pulling too hard permanently degrades the twist geometry that makes the cable work. Damage of this kind does not show up on a continuity check. It shows up as intermittent errors under load six months later. Our crews are trained to respect those limits and to keep cable away from fluorescent ballasts and electrical runs.

Terminate consistently. One standard, T568B unless there is a reason to deviate, applied across the whole installation. Jacket stripped no further back than necessary, pairs untwisted no more than half an inch, punched down cleanly.

Dress and label. Cable runs are combed, supported and dressed in the rack. Every run is labeled at both ends with a consistent scheme. You get a port map documenting what connects where. This is the difference between tracing a connection in two minutes and spending an afternoon with a toner.

Test and certify. Every run is certified with calibrated test equipment against the applicable standard, measuring insertion loss, crosstalk, return loss, delay skew and length. You receive the full report. If a run fails, we fix it and retest before we call the job complete.

Fiber

Copper has a distance limit. Fiber does not, practically speaking, and it is immune to the electrical interference that plagues copper in industrial environments.

We install single mode and multimode fiber for backbone runs between floors, risers, connections between buildings and any run past copper’s limit. That includes fusion splicing, termination, testing with an optical loss test set, and the enclosures and patch panels to terminate it cleanly.

Between buildings, the path drives everything. Underground through existing conduit is straightforward. New conduit, direct burial or aerial each carry different costs and permitting requirements. We survey before quoting rather than guessing.

Server rooms and closets

A telecom closet is a system, not a place to put equipment. We build racks with proper cable management, vertical and horizontal managers, adequate power distribution with the circuits your load actually requires, ventilation appropriate to the heat being generated, and grounding done correctly.

Then we document it. Rack elevations, port maps, circuit assignments and a labeled patch panel schedule. Every one of these saves time on every future change, and they are the first things missing when we take over an environment somebody else built.

Buildouts and moves

New space is by far the cheapest time to do this properly, and the timeline is tighter than most people expect. Cabling has to be installed while ceilings are open, before furniture arrives, and coordinated with the electrician and general contractor.

We work directly with your contractor and architect, handle the low voltage permit where required, and coordinate cabling with the rest of the technology scope: network hardware, phones, access control and conference room AV. Running one crew for all of the low voltage in a buildout is faster and cheaper than coordinating four vendors who each blame the others for the ceiling being closed too early.

Should we install Cat6 or Cat6A?

For general workstation drops Cat6 remains perfectly adequate and supports 10 gigabit over shorter distances. Cat6A is worth the difference for wireless access point runs, longer runs, uplinks between closets and anywhere you expect to need sustained 10 gigabit. The cable itself is a small fraction of the total job cost, and the labor to pull it again later is not, so we usually recommend Cat6A where there is any doubt.

What does certification testing actually mean?

It means each run is tested with calibrated equipment against the standard for its category, measuring insertion loss, crosstalk, return loss and length, and you receive a report per port. It is different from a continuity check that only confirms the wires are connected. Uncertified installations regularly pass a basic check and still cause intermittent problems under load.

Can you work around our business hours?

Yes. Most of our commercial installations happen evenings and weekends specifically to avoid disruption. In occupied buildings we sequence work area by area and clean as we go.

How far in advance should cabling be planned for a new office?

As early as you can. Cabling has to go in before furniture, ideally while ceilings are still open and coordinated with the electrician. It also drives where your telecom closet needs to be, which affects the floor plan. Bringing us in during space planning rather than after the buildout is scheduled saves real money.

Do you handle the fiber between our buildings?

Yes, including single mode and multimode installation, fusion splicing and testing. Whether the path is underground, aerial or through an existing conduit affects the approach considerably, so we survey first.
